Retrofit with Yaskawa Sigma V Servopack
Customer Story: Upgrading from Sigma-II to Sigma-5 – Is it Worth it?
Recently, a customer approached us with an interesting question: “Can I easily replace my older Yaskawa Sigma-II drives with the newer Yaskawa SGDV-120A01A from the Sigma-5 series? Do I also need to replace the motors and cables, and what happens to the stored parameters?”
We’ve thoroughly explored this scenario in practice. The good news is that upgrading to Sigma-5 is generally feasible, as motors and cables can typically remain in use. Parameters can usually be migrated but should be carefully checked and adjusted.
Important considerations:
Pros:
Sigma-5 offers advanced technology, improved precision, and longer-term availability.
Cons:
Sigma-5 devices have recently increased in price. Repairing Sigma-II units might be quicker and more economical.
Important note:
Sigma-5 devices themselves might soon face discontinuation, and a direct upgrade from Sigma-II to the newer Sigma-7 is often unrealistic due to technical complexities.
Conclusion:
Before upgrading, it’s essential to evaluate carefully whether investing in new Sigma-5 units makes economic sense or whether repairing the reliable Sigma-II drives would suffice.
